Lemon was mortally wounded in the leg at the battle of Crampton's Gap in Burkittsville, Maryland. "Corps Badges" The episode looks at the badges that were used to signify a soldier's Corps and Division. The first official use of corps badges came from the Army of the Potomac in April 1863. Soldiers quickly identified with these unique symbols and they were still seen many years after the war on monuments or at reunions. "Poem from Joseph Slemmons" In a letter written in October, 1862, to his mother, Joseph H. Slemmons included a poem, which described life at war. He described long nights on guard duty, the fierceness of battle and the unfortunate soldiers who would never again answer the call to arms.
