Automotive Disc Brake Manual: The Complete Guide to the Theory and Practice of Automotive Disc Braking Systems by Techbook Manuals Haynes, This complete, all-color guide to the theory and practice of automotive and disc braking systems contains information on design, manufacture, and testing of components; maintenance requirements; causes of brake noise and abnormal wear; and advice on when to replace components. Also explains mathematical principles of braking and offers a primer on anti-lock braking systems.
A Technician's Guide to Anti-Lock Brake Systems by Jack Erjavec, Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS) are quickly becoming standard equipment on all cars and light trucks. Although these systems have been available since the mid-80's these systems have become one of the hottest training areas for the automotive after market and schools.
Anti-lock braking system - An anti-lock braking system (commonly known as ABS, from the German name "Antiblockiersystem" given to it by its inventors at Bosch) is a system on motor vehicles which prevents the wheels from locking while braking. The purpose of this is twofold: to allow the driver to maintain steering control and to shorten braking distances (by allowing the driver to fully hit the brake without the fear for skidding or the loss of control; the system itself does not contain miracle wonder technology to improve the tire quality). Electronic brakeforce distribution - Electronic Brake Force Distribution or EBD is an automobile brake technology that automatically varies the amount of force applied to each of a vehicles brakes. Often coupled with Anti-lock braking systems, EBD can apply more or less braking pressure to each wheel in order to maximize stopping power. Brake bleeding - Brake bleeding is the procedure performed on hydraulic brake systems whereby the brake lines (the pipes and hoses containing the brake fluid) are purged of any air bubbles. This is necessary because, while the brake fluid is an incompressible liquid, air bubbles are compressible gas and their presence in the brake system greatly reduces the hydraulic pressure that can be developed within the system. Warded lock - A warded lock (also called a ward lock) is a type of lock that uses a set of obstructions, or wards, to prevent the lock from opening unless the correct key is inserted. The correct key has notches or slots corresponding to the obstructions in the lock, allowing it to rotate freely inside the lock.
